Write On

One might call it insane. I have been repeating the same behaviors and expecting different results. Time and time again, messages come to mind about what to write. At times, I listen and imagine what I would write based on these messages. I’ve put together some amazing blog posts, chapters and creative concepts in my mind. Yet I rarely write them down. The big idea fades away. As quick as it comes together in my mind is as quick as it falls apart. I’ve gone from writing to imagining to barely anything over the years.

Lately, I’ve been reading tips from other writers and bloggers. What I’ve gathered is writing needs to be done on a regular basis. Write about anything and everything.  Whatever it is, if it brings me to write, so be it. The more I write, the more the creativity flows.  I need to put the pen to the paper in some form. Whether it’s doodling, random thoughts, writing a card or note, it’s the act of letting the message out.  I’m not selective about what to write on.  I’ve used notebooks, journals, napkin, sticky note, textbook pages, magazines, books folders, boxes and envelopes.   The idea is to free the words before they go away.

For years, I’ve been editing in my mind instead of just writing the words. It holds me back from continuing with the idea and usually stops the the process. There is a freedom in writing. It’s my creative form of expression. When I filter it before writing it down, I’m messing with the creative flow. I’m not even giving it a chance.  That needs to stop. (That was an “A-ha” writing moment right there!) I’ve come to realize that everything is material when it comes to writing, but not everything needs to be posted. Getting it up and out is key. Putting it out there is up to me. The editing and filtering should come after the first draft is written.

Like a muscle, writing will become stronger if the dedication and consistent effort is made. It needs to be stretched and worked out. In time, it will become part of my routine again.

I can’t expect anything to change if I don’t take action. What can I do to build my writing strength? Hmm…Ok. Got it. This week, I’m going to start by carrying a note pad with me so when the messages comes into my mind, I will write them down.

Change and Creativity

“Change is not something that we should fear.  Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they’re meant to be.”  ~Unknown

Why do so many people fear change instead of welcoming it?  We tend to get into a routine and become quite comfortable with things.  After a while, it is easy to develop a false sense of security.  It feels safe because we know we to expect.  It’s easy to become comfortably numb.  We resist change and close out creativity.

If we are not changing, we are not creating our lives.  Imagine if nothing changed in your life from this day forward.  Everything would remain the same.  Creativity would seize.  In a sense, we would be alive, but not living.  Would you be satisfied?  Would you have any regrets?  What comes up for you?

Whether you realize it or not, you play a part in creating each day.  It begins with creating an intention, attitude or outlook.  Conscious or subconscious, it’s there.  It could be based in fear or love.  Be mindful of your thoughts.

Reflection Questions for the New Year

This is the perfect time to reflect upon this past year.  Are you ready?

To prepare, take a deep breath, slow down, and grab a cup of coffee or tea along with a journal or notebook to write in.  As you go through the reflection questions below, write down what comes to you after reading each one.

There is no right or wrong answer.  Making judgments and having negative thoughts are not part of the plan. This is an exercise for you to use to make positive changes.

  • What did you learn this year about yourself and in general?
  • Pick 5 words to describe this year.
  • What or who brought a smile to your face or warmed your heart this year?
  • What was the single best thing that happened this past year?
  • What was the single most challenging thing that happened?
  • Who came into your life this year?
  • What or who did you let go of this  year?
  • With whom were your most valuable relationships?
  • What effect did this past year have on your emotionally, spiritually and physically?

21 Ways to Live a Better Life

  1. Smile and laugh as often as possible.  They are the ultimate anti-depressants and don’t cost a thing.
  2. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
  3. Focus on the positive.  Invest your energy on good thoughts, positive people and what vibrates at a high level of energy.  (Avoid energy vampires.)
  4. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and less manufactured food.
  5. Make time to do the things that bring you joy and fulfillment.  (Coloring, writing, singing, dancing, drawing, scrap booking, painting, playing an instrument, etc…)
  6. Disconnect from all electronics and connect with nature 15 minutes a day.
  7. Take responsibility for your own happiness.  It is not up to anyone else.
  8. Spend time with people under the age of 5 and over the age of 65.
  9. Drink plenty of water. Stay hydrated.
  10. Practice meditation and affirmations on a regular basis.
  11. Clear clutter from your home, your office and your car to make space for fresh new and flowing energy in your life.
  12. Let it go. Life is too short to hold onto resentments or waste time hating anyone.  Forgive and release everything!  You will feel lighter.
  13. Do at least one activity a day that gets your body moving. Take a walk. Go running. Hike. Hit the gym. Keep it moving.
  14. Be kind to yourself. (Would you treat others the same way you treat yourself?)
  15. Agree to disagree. You don’t have to win every argument.
  16. Stop comparing your life to other peoples’ lives.  Comparison robs us of our joy.
  17. Prepare for your situation to change, good or bad.  Change is constant.
  18. Stay in touch with your friends and family.  Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will.
  19. Do the right thing for the right reasons. (Check your motives before taking action.)
  20. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.  Be grateful instead of hateful.
  21. Be of Service.  Give back.  Volunteer.  Help someone.  It is beyond fulfilling.

What’s Holding You Back From Moving Forward?

Imagine being out in the wilderness on a beautiful spring day.  There is a stream flowing downhill filled with colorful fish, rocks and leaves.  The birds are singing and you can feel the sun shining on your face.  Ahhhhh!  You start to walk along the stream and follow a school of fish swimming by.  Up ahead, you notice some bark from a tree is blocking part of the stream.  Leaves and rocks are starting to form a barrier making it very difficult for the fish to pass through.  It seems as though there is not enough room for the fish to move forward and break on through to the other side.  Because of this “perceived” illusion, the fish start to give up.  Now what? (Can you relate?)

As a life coach, one of the common topics clients want to focus on is moving forward in their lives when something is holding them back.  Their goals, dreams and ideas are like the rocks and leaves in the stream.  The stream represents the flow of life events and experiences.  The tree bark  and leaves are the fears, mental blocks and false beliefs that appear to hold them back from moving forward.  With coaching, I help clients become aware of all the paths in the stream of their minds they might not have seen.  We discover ways to put a plan of actions in place to take action, grow and change.

You are not broken

Messages surround us every day.

Taking a walk the other day, I came across what appeared to be graffiti. As I got closer, the message became clear. “You are not broken.” It stopped me in my tracks.

For so many years I thought I was broken and could not be fixed. I lived in self consuming misery. I was the eternal victim and didn’t understand why.  I believed the lies that I told myself. The problem was the source of my advice. My mind!  It was my self centered, fear based thinking that led me to believe I was broken. When I was ready to change, my life took a turn for the better.

If you feel broken, I’m here to tell you feelings are not facts. Just hold on. Life is a series of ups and downs with lots of twists and turns. You will learn from it all. Just step back and get out of your own way. You are not broken. You are a beautiful spiritual being. You are loved.

Work in Progress

I am a work in progress.

At times my heart has been temporarily closed for repairs.

My mind has been extended with new bridges for thoughts to travel along.

The capicity for how many may be onsite changes with time.

There are constant changes happening.

Some days are more challenging then others.

Unpredictable storms may create danger zones.

I cannot do it alone and have a team to help me when I ask.

It will take a life time to finish.

Redesign and renovations of some areas are to be expected.

Things will not always go according to plan.

With each experience, I will keep on learning and building more.
